Client Success Story

Name: Randy Macdonald
Location: Meredith, NH

GoSolar NE: Tell us a bit about how you “got in” to solar?

Macdonald: I was influenced by my father. His merchant marine, navy and wartime experiences got him interested in independent living. My mother grew up on a farm in Kansas so living off the land was natural for her. My father and I loved to pour over books and articles about sustainable living, off the grid projects, water, wind and solar power. We just felt that the sun should be our primary energy source.

GoSolar NE: What ultimately led you to decide, “Yes, I’m doing this”?

Macdonald: It was finding someone who would come out and check to see if my home was suitable and could install the system.

GoSolar NE: How did GoSolar NH help you in this process?

Macdonald: They were very informative about how we could get the job done, the applicable cost saving rebates, and they were correct in that if you can afford your electric bill you could afford solar.

GoSolar NE: How did you learn of GoSolar? How/when did you get in contact?

Macdonald: I spoke with them when they had a booth at the Alton High School for a spring home show I was at.

GoSolar NE: Did they answer any questions you had? Did they give you information that you didn’t already have that helped aide you in your decision?

Macdonald: I was already sold on the idea, I just needed someone to competently complete the project.

GoSolar NE: Tell us about your project. What did you decide to go with (how big of an array, etc.)?

Macdonald: GoSolar checked to see if my site would be good for solar panels, and configured the system to produce about 108 percent of my power needs utilizing 17 solar panels to build out the complete solar array.

GoSolar NE: When did the process to install your solar array start?

Macdonald: I signed papers in May of 2017

GoSolar NE: When did it end? We were producing power in late June of 2017.

GoSolar NE: How was the process from start to finish?

Macdonald: Excellent on all accounts.

GoSolar NE: What was your experience like in dealing with the staff of GoSolar?

Macdonald: Once again the were very knowlegable, answered my questions, and even asked and answered questions I had not thought of. They arranged for the state rebate and will send me the documents I need for my 2017 federal tax rebate/credit, which really makes the entire process quite painless and incredibly beneficial.

GoSolar NE: Have you experienced any sort of financial benefits due to the acquisition of your solar array?

Macdonald: At this point, the money breaks even so-to-speak. I like that I am able to provide clean power to the grid. I will inquire about batteries and having excess go to the grid in the future. I like the independence of solar energy. In the near future I expect there to be a breakthrough that will provide much more efficient panels and storage systems.

GoSolar NE: Any other benefits that may not fall into the “financial” end of things? What’s life like with solar?

Macdonald: Perhaps the thought that maybe I am starting to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. I have always taken energy efficiency to heart and I have all LED bulbs, and EnergyStar appliances in the house. I use motion activated LED lights in hallways so I do not have to turn on ceiling lights and consume energy when there’s no reason to be consuming energy. I turn lights off when I don’t need them and use smart power strips to reduce vampire electrical usage such as instant on TVs and such.

GoSolar NE: Would you recommend GoSolar to anybody else thinking about solar energy?

Macdonald: Yes, absolutely.
